Parishes: spiritual journeys in the peaceful countryside
You can imagine the rustic and charming pathways in the areas of Forlì and Cesena to discover these places of worship that were important centers for small rural Christian communities. We have selected seven, but in the Province of Forlì-Cesena there are dozens of them ...
Originally the term "pieve" identified the community of the faithful under the authority of the Church; it was, therefore, of intermediate links between the Bishop and the parish: normally they were located outside the city walls with the task of give the sacrament of baptism because they always had a baptismal font and of collection of taxes in favor of the Church of Ravenna that even before the Mille exercised its jurisdiction by brands to Istria.
The full ecclesial function of the churches (which appear only from the sixth century) can be seen from the seventh century, finds its full development in the ninth century and culminating in the twelfth century, when the churches acquire the prerogative of simple churches in the county.
These churches are often built alongside or in place of the pagan religious buildings of which inherit part of the architecture by the re-use, although in some cases it is really hard to find the original architectural features. They had a precise structural model, taken from the paleochristian architecture of Ravenna (an example is the mausoleum of Galla Placidia). Externally they were very simple building, in bricks, with seven gates, in many cases erased by modern remakes and oriented with the apse facing east.
They will be equipped with a bell tower only from the eighth and ninth centuries.
